hobi Carpets (also spelled Choubi or Ziegler) are hand-knotted oriental rugs renowned for combining traditional Persian floral motifs with soft, muted earth tones designed to fit seamlessly into modern interiors.
Key Characteristics
Natural Vegetable Dyes: The word “Chobi” comes from the Persian word for wood (chob). These rugs are crafted using hand-spun wool dyed exclusively with natural vegetable pigments derived from tree bark, roots, walnut husks, and fruit peels, giving them soft, organic shades.
Muted Palette: Features subtle shades of ivory, beige, terracotta, sage green, soft gold, and muted blue rather than bold or saturated primary colors.
Classic Patterns: Often showcase open, large-scale palmette, floral, or vine motifs (influenced by classic 19th-century Sultanabad and Ziegler styles) without an overly dense central medallion.
Abrash Effect: Due to the hand-spinning and natural dyeing process, the wool exhibits gentle variations in color tone (abrash), adding character and depth to each piece.
Craftsmanship & Care
Origin: Traditionally hand-knotted by skilled weavers across Afghanistan and Pakistan using hand-spun Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation.
Durability: The high-lanolin content in hand-spun wool makes Chobi rugs highly durable and resistant to stains and heavy foot traffic.
Maintenance: Vacuum using a suction-only setting (avoiding the beater bar), clean spills immediately with cold water and mild soap, and rotate periodically to ensure even wear.
